What a Cat Blood Panel Is Actually Made Of

A standard feline blood panel is really two tests reported together. The complete blood count, or CBC, looks at the cells themselves – the red cells that carry oxygen, the white cells that respond to inflammation and infection, and the platelets that help blood clot. The serum chemistry screen looks at what is dissolved in the fluid the cells float in: enzymes and waste products that report on the kidneys and liver, the electrolytes that keep cells working, the proteins, and the glucose. Seeing both at once is the point. The cells and the chemistry cross-check each other, so a finding in one group can confirm, soften or redirect the reading of another. That is also why no experienced clinician scans the page for the single worst number – the report is designed to be read as a whole, and a practical walk-through of the common abnormalities follows exactly that logic.
Why the Reference Range on Your Report Is the One That Matters
Every value on the panel is printed next to a reference interval – the band of results seen in a population of healthy cats. A result is flagged high or low simply because it falls outside that band, and that flag is the start of interpretation, not the end of it. The interval itself is specific to the analyser and method a given laboratory uses, so the numbers drift between labs. A figure quoted from a website or from a different practice can therefore be misleading; the band beside your own cat’s result is always the final word. Reading the Panel in Groups, Not in Lines

The fastest way to make sense of a crowded report is to stop reading it top to bottom and start reading it in clusters. Each cluster answers one question, and the markers within it support or check one another. The table below is how a clinician mentally sorts the page before drawing any conclusion.

The Kidney and Liver Lines Owners Notice First

Two clusters tend to draw the eye first because they come up so often in cats: the kidney markers and the liver enzymes. With the kidneys, creatinine and SDMA both rise when filtration falls, and reading them together is more reliable than reading either alone – SDMA is regarded as an earlier signal of reduced kidney function, which is why a raised SDMA draws attention even when other values still look acceptable. Because chronic kidney change is so common in older cats, persistent shifts here are taken seriously and graded carefully, a process set out in the IRIS approach to feline creatinine. BUN sits in the same group but is less specific, since it also climbs with dehydration or after a protein-rich meal, so it is always weighed against the cat’s hydration and, ideally, the urine.
On the liver side, ALT is the leakage enzyme – a rise tells you liver cells are injured, not why. ALP and GGT report on bile flow instead, and in cats ALP carries particular weight: it has a short half-life, so even a modest increase is meaningful and points toward cholestasis rather than the bone activity it can reflect in growing animals. Bilirubin completes the picture by showing whether the cat is moving toward jaundice. None of these enzymes name a diagnosis on its own; they describe a direction of injury that the rest of the panel and a physical exam then refine.
The Quieter Markers That Reshape the Reading
The values owners skip over are often the ones that change a clinician’s interpretation. Protein, electrolytes, calcium and glucose rarely make a headline by themselves, yet each can tilt the meaning of a more obvious abnormality.
